Course Outlines

All training courses are held in pleasant venues and are run in a friendly, non- threatening way.  Learning should be fun and PDI strives to provide a happy environment whilst delivering high quality courses through a team of highly experienced teachers and facilitators.

Health Care Assistants

Basic immunisation and update training is provided for Health Care Assistants in primary care with the involvement of local Public Health Departments and Health Protection Units.

Immunisation update Course

This half day course provides updates on changes to immunisation schedules and policies,reinforces existing knowledge and provides opportunities to address areas of concern.

Immunisation and Vaccination Course

A two day training course designed for the nurse who is new to administering immunisations in practice although courses often include very experienced practitioners who wish to ensure that their knowledge is according to current national guidelines. Students come from general practice, school nursing, accident and emergency departments and from neo -natal units. The course provides opportunities for involvement in practical sessions in administration of vaccines as well as theoretical aspects of good practice. This course will help to eliminate some of the anxieties that surround the nurse who often works in isolation but who is faced with the responsibility of administering immunisations to babies and children as well as adults.

Sexual Health Course

This is a half day update which is being provided in response to demand by Practice Nurses who attended the two day cervical smear course. They wanted more information on how to deal with sexually transmitted disease and women with discharge. In particular the course will cover some of the aspects of when, why and how to take the most appropritate swabs. A consultant specialist and senior health advisor from the genito urinary clinic in Derriford Hospital are the main speakers as they are involved in this part of the two day cervical smear course . They are always highly evaluated.

Travel Health Course

A one day basic primary care training course or an update according to requirements for practice nurses who need updating on the latest travel health vaccine requirements that tend to change very frequently. It also serves those who are new to administering travel health advice and / or treatment. Speakers from local hospitals and from London ensure that information provided follows current national guidelines.

Effective Team Building

This programme provides participants with a practical opportunity to learn/refresh their teamwork skills. Specifically, how to create, develop and sustain high performance teamwork.

Family Planning Update Course

An update day training course either half a day or full day designed to build confidence to nurses who provide advice and management of family planning Family planning doctors deliver the courses which are facilitated by Mary White. Practical group sessions using anatomical models enable students to practice their skills in family planning methods.

Cervical Smear Updates

NHSCSP Guidelines (2006) state that all smear takers should attend a half- day update training course every three years. This half day course addresses the required standards . Local experts are involved and up to date developments such as Liquid Based cytology and HPV Traige Testing issues are included in the programme as well as addressing genito urinary problems, cytology laboratory requirements and the needs of hard-to-reach groups. If it is diffiucult to take time out of work and money is short then  Online Workshops will enable cervical smear (sample) takers to complete their three yearly update training update at a time and in a place that is convenient to them. Cervical Smear Course

This training programme for cervical smear (sample) takers is based on current NHS Cancer Screening Programme guidelines (NHSCSP 2006). It is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to enable students to function proficiently within the national programme. The smear training programme is approved by the South West Regional Cervical Screening Quality Assurance Reference Centre, Bristol. The programme includes theoretical and practical components and encourages the trainee to develop skills and confidence in a supervised and unsupervised setting. Students are required to visit their local cytology laboratory and their local colposcopy unit. The course can now be APEL'd through Plymouth university for 20 credits at level three with the addition of a written assignment.
